The 19th Annual Grotius Lecture at the ASIL Annual Meeting: Civil War Time from Grotius to the Global War on Terror

Next week is the annual meeting of the American Society of International Law in Washington DC. For nearly 20 years, the meeting has begun with the distinguished Grotius Lecture, which takes place on the opening night of the conference. The Grotius Lecture is co-sponsored by ASIL and (I’m pleased to add) my law school, Washington College of Law.

This year’s Grotius Lecture will be delivered by David Armitage, Lloyd C. Blankfein Professor of History at Harvard University. He is author most recently of Civil Wars: A History in Ideas (Knopf 2017), which has received high praise and acclaim from reviewers (including Andrew Kent, reviewing it for Lawfare).

Professor Armitage's Lecture is titled “Civil War Time: From Grotius to the Global War on Terror." Distinguished Discussant for the Grotius Lecture is Mary Dudziak, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law, Emory University School of Law (and, we're proud to note, one of Lawfare’s book review editors). Moderator for the event is Camille Nelson, Dean of Washington College of Law, American University. Lawfare readers in the Washington DC area might want to attend what promises to be an outstanding discussion of a topic, civil war, that unfortunately is never off Lawfare’s radar screen.
