We’re pleased to announce that we are hiring a new full-time senior editor based in Washington, D.C. If you’ve ever listened to our podcasts or read our articles and thought, “I want to be part of that team,” now is your chance.

The senior editor will report to the Editor in Chief and Executive Editor on all editorial duties. Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Producing original content, including written articles and podcasts, for publication on Lawfare’s website and other platforms, including on an expedited basis if warranted by current events;
  • Contributing sophisticated analysis of key issues in national security law and policy;
  • Monitoring news events, legal developments, policy debates, and scholarly work on matters of substantive expertise and any assigned topics, and ensuring that Lawfare’s editorial team is apprised of any such matters that implicate Lawfare’s issue space;
  • Contributing to Lawfare’s efforts to publish the highest-quality content, including by soliciting feedback and content from experts, working with outside contributors, and developing networks of professional contacts with diverse areas of interest and expertise;
  • Serving as a member of the senior editorial team, including by helping to shape Lawfare’s editorial policies and priorities;
  • Assisting the Managing Editor in evaluating outside submissions by providing substantive and editorial feedback in a timely manner;
  • Assisting with fundraising and donor-required documentation, as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned by Lawfare management.

Candidates must have exceptional written and oral communication skills; a demonstrated capacity to produce high-quality written analysis; an interest in national security law and/or policy; and excellent interpersonal skills. Candidates must be able to work effectively with minimal supervision, meet deadlines, and perform under high pressure and time constraints. The ideal candidate will have a professional background in journalism, law, policy, or academia, and will be familiar with Lawfare’s work.

Candidates must have expertise and demonstrated ability to produce written analysis in at least one—and ideally more—of the following areas:

  • Courts and litigation coverage
  • Democracy, elections, and the rule of law
  • Legal analysis
  • The Justice Department and other Executive Branch departments
  • Congress
  • Technology policy (e.g., platform regulation, content moderation, AI)
  • Foreign influence on American governance
  • Cybersecurity

The written analysis may take the form of legal analysis, journalism, and/or scholarly analysis.
