Habeas lawyer David Remes, who represents Guantanano detainees, writes in with the following comment on the Guantanamo hunger strikes, and Steve's, my and the Taliban's response to them:
Several days ago, Steve Vladeck noted the release of a letter by the Center for Constitutional Rights and individual habeas attorneys calling attention to the mass hunger strike by detainees at Guantanamo and deploring developments there that signal a return to prison policies abandoned years ago as inhumane and counterproductive.
Does Ben say about the prison's return to those policies? No, but he derided the Taliban's reaction to to the Quran searches as hypocritical. The Taliban, hypocritical? Mon dieu! The lesson I draw from the Taliban's reaction is that despite suggestions to the contrary, including some of my own, Guantanamo remains a potent tool for recruiting terrorists.
And speaking of Ben's penchant for reacting to the reaction and not to the thing itself, I'm still waiting for him to propose a human rights agenda for the United States.
