On Dec. 9, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued a memorandum to Department of Defense personnel announcing the launch of GenAI.mil, a military-focused generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform with capabilities from Google’s AI application, Gemini.

The memo explains that the service—which, according to the defense secretary, is authorized to handle controlled unclassified information and can be used for tasks such as writing documents and conducting research—will be immediately available to all military service members, civilians, and contractors with the Defense Department.

In the memo, Hegseth emphasized that department staff should “log in, learn [the platform], and incorporate it into [their] daily workflows immediately.” The defense secretary also stated that AI should be “in your battle rhythm every single day" and that by mastering the generative AI platform as a tool, “we will outpace our adversaries.” The memo also promises that Google Gemini is only “the first of several enterprise AI applications” set to be implemented on the Pentagon’s new GenAI platform.
