On Oct. 16, a Maryland grand jury indicted former National Security Advisor John Bolton on 18 counts of unlawfully retaining and transmitting classified material. Bolton is accused of sending “diary-like entries” that included classified national defense information to two individuals who did not have the necessary clearance level while serving as national security advisor to President Trump in his first term.

The indictment follows an FBI search of Bolton’s home in August. The FBI was searching for classified information that Bolton had allegedly kept in his home following his exit from government in 2019.

Bolton is the third prominent critic of President Trump to be indicted in the president’s second term. Former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James were each indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia this fall.
