Afreen Akhter

Afreen Akhter is a visiting scholar with the American Statecraft Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where she focuses on economic statecraft. She most recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia. Previously, she was Senator Chris Van Hollen’s national security adviser. She has held other roles at the State Department and the National Security Council and holds degrees from the Harvard Kennedy School and Brown University.
