More than 1,100 former prosecutors and Department of Justice officials signed an open letter calling for Attorney General William Barr to resign after his department lowered the sentencing recommendation for Roger Stone. The former DOJ officials wrote that Barr’s intervention in the Stone case has tarnished the department’s reputation, reports NPR. You can read the statement here.
The Taliban said Monday that a peace deal with the United States will be signed by the end of the month. Senior Taliban leader Abdul Salam Hanafi said in a video message that “both sides have initiated the final draft of the peace agreement. Now talks are concluded,” according to the Washington Post. Also this week, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was declared the winner of a disputed presidential election held almost five months ago, reports the New York Times.
Turkey emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions with the Syrian government in northwestern Syria during talks with Russian counterparts in Moscow, reports the New York Times. Discussions will continue today.
European Union foreign ministers agreed to revive a naval mission in the Mediterranean Sea to enforce the internationally-backed arms embargo on Libya, writes Reuters.
